.Sun Conure
Care
The Sun Conures are an absolute delight. They are beautiful to
look at and are so cuddly. The
latin name for them is Aratinga solstitialis and they belong to
the Aratinga family of conures. They make wonderful pets and their only
drawback is their sometimes loud calling. This occurs mostly in the
morning and evening,
however, it is more pronounced in breeder birds than in your tame hand raised
bird. But
as with all birds each bird has his or her individual trait. They
are regular acrobats and little clowns and they love to get your attention. They can learn to speak in somewhat
squeaky voices, but their ability in this is somewhat limited. However they do
make up for this with their cuddly personality. They can sit for hours on your
shoulder and just nestled on your neck or want to be held.
Housing:
The cage for your Sun Conure as with all other pet birds should be as
large as possible, however we do recommend a minimum size of app.. 20 x
20 x 24. Your perches should be of various sizes and shapes, starting
at 3/4 of an inch in
diameter. Various sizes help prevent foot problems. We use grape vines which they love,
since they can chew on them also.
Toys:
Sun Conures love toys, the more the better. Sun conures can
entertain themselves and you for hours. Hanging toys are favorites for this
species. They love to climb and hang. Rope toys, chain toys, and toys with hoops
or rings are great. Small pieces of cardboard or toilet paper rolls make good
chew items in the cage. Sun conures are chewers, and these items will help
maintain a healthy beak and also save on
perches.
Bathing:
Sun conures love bathing and will not hesitate to bathe in their
own water bowl if you do not provide them with a bathing dish. Another
suggestion for bathing sun conures is to spray them with a water bottle using a
soft mist which they will ultimately enjoy!
Sun Conure Diet
One of the most important aspects of basic sun conure care is the
sun conure diet. A good base seed/pellet diet is a great way to start.
A healthy sun conure diet not only consists of pellets and seeds
but also includes plenty of fruits and vegetables. We also give them foods we
eat, pasta is a favorite. Just be
sure to NEVER feed your sun conure bird avocado, iceburg lettuce, cabbage or
parsley. These foods will be harmful to your sun conure bird so please avoid
them at all costs.
Training & handling:
As I mentioned earlier, sun conure parrots are highly intelligent
birds. Words cannot even describe how smart these little birds are. They love
playing and being held by their owners and are so open and willing to learn
tricks and even how to talk. Though they have a cute squeaky voice, it is
amazing how fast a sun conure bird can be taught to speak. They truly enjoy
performing their newly acquired tricks for their owners as long as you praise
them with a treat every time they correctly perform a trick. Spending about 15
minutes a day with your sun conure bird teaching them words and tricks will
surely make your sun conure a happy bird.
